What Are Chalet Cuckoo Clocks?
The Swiss are another nation famous for producing world known cuckoo clocks. One of the best Swiss types of cuckoo clocks are the Chalet Cuckoo Clocks. They were first created in the late 19th century in the Swiss Alps and they are considered even now priceless Swiss clock souvenirs. There is not one, but three styles of Chalet cuckoo clocks: the Black Forest chalet, the Swiss chalet and the Bavarian chalet. The Swiss chalet type has two subgroups, the "Brienz" and the respectively, the "Emmenthal. The Swiss cuckoo clocks manufacturers included music boxes in clocks belonging to the Bavarian chalet types. Two of the most popular melodies sang by the Swiss music boxes were "The Happy Wanderer" and "Edelweiss". The Swiss clock producers used cuckoo bird representations for their cuckoo birds, but they also used other figurines as well, such as woodcutters, moving beer drinkers and turning water wheels. More expensive Swiss cuckoo clocks had a dancing figurine and an enjoyable, short song. The Swiss did not move to away from the traditional aspect of cuckoo clocks: they still made them in form of a birdhouse or chalet. The casing is usually made of wood and they are meant to be hanging on the wall. Most manufacturers choose to decorate the exterior of the clock with nature motifs, such as leaves or different animals. Nowadays, the bird that comes out and announces the time is automated. The basic design did not change much over the centuries; the bird still comes out of small trap door. You may be asking how the bird moves when the clock strikes an hour of half an hour: it is animated by an arm that lifts the back of the carving. Some designers have also included small music boxes and when the bird announces the time, they play a small song. This is usually the case with German or Swiss cuckoo clock manufacturers and they used such music boxes when they used other figurines instead of the bird. In the beginning, cuckoo clocks were mechanically powered. Very few were driven by springs. Nowadays however, to east the manufacturing process, modern cuckoo clock manufacturers began to produce battery-powered clocks. They have moved away from the traditional methods of creating mechanically cuckoo clocks and the sounds are digital recorded cuckoo songs. Most of them do not have a gong wire. This is not the only change clock manufacturers have put into cuckoo clocks. Because some people were annoyed by the bird song announcing the time all night long, modern cuckoo clocks have a light sensor: when the sensor detects that the amount of light has dropped, it interprets this as a sign of nighttime and turns off the singing mechanism. However, this is a tradeoff made to modern lifestyle and people who would like a traditional cuckoo clock just for this element may be disappointed with these modern features. It is up to you if you want a modern clock or a traditional one.
